A Clean Start to Washing Clothes

Green Keener is a monthly column chronicling one urban woman’s quest for a greener way of life, without compromise to her fabulous lifestyle.

My 2012 resolution list actually started back in the summer of 2011 with this column. In addition to these chronicles, I’m now reading environmentally themed books and websites, stocking my home with 100-percent recycled toilet paper and scrutinizing labels. Researching and asking green questions before opening my wallet is now second nature.

I started thinking about my laundry habits when the washing instruction tag in my new organic cotton shirt made by Horny Toad read, “Dirty is the new clean. Wear more. Wash less. Wear it out or pass it on.” According to David Suzuki’s Green Guide (2008), “The energy-efficient [washer] model might cost an extra $100, but over its fifteen-year lifespan it could save you $825 in energy costs (plus further savings on water).”

As I already own an Energy Star front-loading washing machine, wash full loads in cold water and employ the sniff test to determine if an item requires cleaning after one wear, the cleaning product itself remains. With so much to consider—going scent-free, avoiding bleach and more—the average consumer can easily find themselves knee deep in more than just dirty socks and undies. When I came across a cleaner made by a manufacturer based in nearby Markham, Ontario, I was intrigued. As I write, my washer is swishing away on another load using Nature Clean 3X Concentrate Laundry Liquid.

I spoke with Melanie Cooper, Brand Manager, Frank T. Ross & Sons, about this product.

Bamboo Magazine: How does 3X laundry liquid compare with traditional detergents?
Melanie Cooper: We keep formulations simple. We don’t add any stain removers, bleaches or optical brighteners to our formula; we want it as clean and hypoallergenic as possible. Our 3X laundry liquid is 99.9-percent natural—the formula is made with ingredients derived from plants or minerals…[and the] cost per load is around C $0.21…mass detergents can range from C $0.19 to $0.31.

BM: Should I do anything differently?
MC: When using 3X laundry liquid, it’s important to use what you need. Follow the dosage directions; it can be easy to overdose. If you need extra cleaning power, rub some detergent on your stains before placing in the wash.

BM: There are many new products out there, including soapberries and plastic balls. What are your thoughts on these?
MC: We feel everyone should try what they need to and make their own personal decision on what works for them. We find laundry liquid and powder format are really convenient and widely available.

BM: How often would you recommend consumers wash their clothing?
MC: As a society, North Americans wash clothing that really isn’t dirty. We often wear an outfit once and then throw it in the wash. It’s a comfort thing and a personal choice; most people feel like their clothes are dirty after wearing once, when they’re really not. If you’re comfortable wearing something again that you’ve already worn once without washing it, then go for it. If you’re ok with a little stain that’s on your shirt that nobody will really notice, then leave it for the next wash. If it really bothers you, try a spot treatment. Please note, though, undergarments should be washed after wearing once.

As my initial loads with Nature Clean 3X Concentrate Laundry Liquid have yielded results that are comparable to traditional detergent, I’ll be adding this product to my laundry list. When it comes to eco-friendly clothing care, keen label readers can now uncover some great earth friendly cleaning products in local shops as well as major supermarkets.

If you resolve to green your washing habits, I highly recommend you research and test out what works best for your specific needs. Adria Vasil’s Ecoholic: Your Guide to the Most Environmentally Friendly Products, Information and Services in Canada (2007) and Ecoholic Home: The Greenest, Cleanest and Most Energy-Efficient Information Under One (Canadian) Roof (2009) provide some great tips and advice for how to make a clean, green start with your next load of laundry.
