Green Beauty is the eco beauty authority—a weekly column that highlights the best in eco beauty products, brands, trends and techniques.

Foundation is a product that has a bad reputation due to its origins. Pancake makeup was the early incarnation; it was much thicker to apply and looked heavy on the skin. What was great for stage didn’t translate well to the street. As a result, many women were scared early, and a constant fear of looking too made-up still plagues them as they visit their favourite makeup counters or boutiques.

Today, foundations can be mineral-based, cream, cream-to-powder or tinted moisturizer. There is now a way for everyone to get even skin tones.

When picking your foundation, swipe two to three colour choices on your jaw line, and gently blend them into your skin. Go to the best available source of natural light to truly judge which colour is right for you. Remember to also glance at your neck to make sure the balance works. When in doubt, a second opinion is always helpful to solidify your decision.

Our favourite picks to even out skin tone while adding hydration and luminosity are Vapour Organic Beauty and Jane Iredale tinted moisturizers.
