Dr. Jenny is a monthly column exploring symptoms of health imbalances and offering eco-friendly options for achieving best health.
How can medicine be more in tune with our bodies, health and environment? This is one of the questions that drew me into naturopathic medicine
as a vocation.
Naturopathic medicine has a number of precepts (six or seven depending on the source), but the concept of treating the whole person is the principle that I find most inspiring. It allows naturopathic doctors to look at the body as one complex and harmonious organism, with each part and each system reliant on the next for optimal functioning–a Gestalt-inspired theory, resulting in treatments that involve fine-tuning and restoration of balance.
One of the unique advantages of the treatments in naturopathic medicine is the ability to choose medicines and treatments that have minimal impact on the environment. When considering therapy, one can consider packaging waste, recyclability of containers, sustainable sourcing of botanicals, vitamins and minerals, and the effect of treatments on the water system.
The best medicine for personal health can absolutely be eco-friendly. Knowing options that support health and the environment allows for more individual choice.
In this new column, Dr. Jenny, I will be discussing symptoms related to imbalances in the body and will share eco-friendly options for your best health. Tune in next month for my first article, which will cover natural ways for boosting your immune system in the fight against colds and flu viruses.
