Bambini is an ongoing column that features Bamboo’s favourite eco parenting ideas and products, for children of all ages.

There’s no denying that kid’s furniture is all kinds of adorable, but, before you splurge on a pint-sized foam-filled lounger, know this: that new piece of furniture is likely made from polyurethane foam, which contains all sorts of nasty chemicals, such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and surfactants, all of which may pose serious health risks to your young’un.

While avoiding shrunken pieces of furniture is one option, so is purchasing items from companies that meet sustainable manufacturing processes. One we love is Monte Design, which uses natural, seed-based oils to make the CFC- and PDBE-free foam used in their Cubino chair and loveseat (C $110+), as well as durable micro suede covers that meet globally uniform and scientifically based fabric criteria.

The fact that they’re fantastically stylish doesn’t hurt either.
