Comedian Goes Underwater as Discovery’s New Chief Shark Officer

Shark Week is back. And the longest-running programming event on cable is about to get bigger. Be sure to tune in next week, Sunday, July 31, 2011, as fun-loving Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Andy Samberg promises to blow the Discovery Channel’s 24th Annual Shark Week out of the water.

Designated as the new Chief Shark Officer (CSO), Andy heads to the Bahamas, slips into a wetsuit and takes the plunge off the shark-infested shores of Nassau. Braving the waters as part of the one-hour Shark City special, the California kid gets up close and personal with a unique pack of sharks. Watch as he explores their quirks, gets familiar with their distinct personalities and finds out how they size each other up—and what scares them.

Shark Week Frenzy

This summer’s must-see 16th season of Shark Week features eight hour-long episodes. The series explores sharks’ habits and habitats around the world in an effort to promote the conservation of species.

About one-third of shark species worldwide are threatened, with recent reports indicating dramatic drops of as much as 90 percent along the United States’ eastern seaboard alone.

Learn why sharks are lingering closer to shore and swimming under surfers and in shallow beach waters, and why fresh-water rivers might not be such a good idea for quick dips.

An Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated comedian, Andy can be seen regularly on SNL. He is also known as part of the popular comedy troupe The Lonely Island, with whom he produced several high-profile SNL Digital Shorts (comedic short films, hip hop songs and music videos featuring the likes of Justin Timberlake, T-Pain, Akon and Nicki Minaj). A few of Andy’s film credits include the starring role in Hot Rod, and parts in Space Chimps and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
